⚽ UK Sports – Football

Football is really popular in the UK, and our first professional clubs started way back in the late 1800s. Each part of the UK has its own leagues, where teams from different towns and cities play against each other. People usually support and cheer for their local team.

But football isn't just for the big leagues - lots of regular folks play it too, whether in local leagues or just for fun in the park.

The English Premier League is a big deal around the world, with some of the best players joining in. UK teams also compete in Europe's UEFA Champions League.

And then there's the World Cup, where each part of the UK has its own national team. England last won it in 1966 when they hosted the event.

In football, the aim is to score more goals than the other team within a 90-minute game. The game is divided into two halves, each lasting 45 minutes. At halftime, which comes after the first 45 minutes, players take a 15-minute break. The second half then resumes, and if necessary, the referee adds on extra time for injuries.

🚨Fun Fact: The first football match with rules similar to today's game was played in 1863? It was between two teams called the Barnes Club and the Richmond Club!
